Þær sorglegu frétttir hafa borist að Mark Linkous, forsprakki Sparklehorse, hafi tekið eigið líf í gær, laugardaginn 6. mars.

Mark Linkous var eini fasti meðlimur Sparklehorse og gaf út fjórar plötur undir því nafni; Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot (1995), Good Morning Spider (1998), It’s A Wonderful Life (2001) og Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain (2006), og gerði auk þess samstarfsplöturnar In The Fishtank (2009) með Fennesz og Dark Night of the Soul (2009) ásamt Danger Mouse og David Lynch, en meðal fjölmargra gesta á henni voru Flaming Lips, Frank Black úr Pixies, Julian Casablancas úr The Strokes og Iggy Pop. Þar fyrir utan vann Linkous mikið með snillingnum Daniel Johnston og ekki ómerkari listamenn en Tom Waits og PJ Harvey hafa spilað inn á plötur Sparklehorse.

Af þessari löngu upptalningu má sjá að Linkous var vel metinn meðal annarra tónlistarmanna þó að tónlist hans sjálfs hafi helst hlotið athygli meðal tónlistargrúskara. Slíkt er að sjálfsögðu mikil synd enda var hann frábær og einlægur lagasmiður og án ef einn af helstu snillingum jaðarpoppsins.

Til þess að minnast Mark Linkous – og vonandi kynna einhverjum fyrir Sparklehorse – hef ég valið nokkur lög sem ættu að gefa nasasjón af ferli hans. Við byrjum á fyrsta laginu sem Sparklehorse sendi frá sér, „London“, og endum af tveimur lögum af Dark Night of the Soul.
